The Sounding Board
February 12, 2012 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week we explored the incredible news that all of us are intended to hear from God on a very consistent basis. But, as you may have already experienced, discerning ‘what was from God’ and what was from the ‘bad mushrooms’ can be a bit tricksy at time. Thus, the Hebrew writer reminded us that in light of God’s continual ‘babbling on’ (see last week), it is helpful to have a sounding board to bounce insights off of, to make sure we are on course throughout life.  read more...
The God Who Speaks
February 5, 2012 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
And oh my do things get interesting when God does.
Hebrews 1:1-4
Even a Bible novice can’t help but notice, when finished reading Genesis 1, that when God speaks, ‘things happen’ in a major way. The writer of Hebrews1 wastes no time in pronouncing that the God who ‘spoke’ the creation into existence, didn’t stop there. God is a talkative being who has more than a few things to say to those who are listening...  read more...

Genesis For The Many...
January 22, 2012 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Whew!, finally back in my arena: exegesis of Scripture and consequent theology. My dabbling in micro biology, evolutionary theory and intelligent design has worn my simple brain out, not to mention the ‘hack job’ of explaining it to which you have been subjected. But today, I’m back in my playground, the world of exegesis and theology. And oh how I love to explore God’s Word, the footing for that which often can’t be ‘measured’ (an inside joke for those of you who have suffered through this entire series).   read more...

6 Days or 2,000,000,000 years. Does it matter?
Genesis 2:4-9
Spock, one of my favorite Star Trek characters, often used the following line, “Eliminate the impossible, whatever is left, regardless of how improbable, must be true.” Now that is a great piece of wisdom. But what if you lose the ability to say, “That’s not possible!” What if regardless of how ‘‘improbable a thing is” no one is ever allowed to say, “That is impossible!” Such is the current case within advances in molecular biology and its current relationship to ‘evolutionary theory’.   read more...

The Evolutionary Battle Is Much Older Than You Think... Romans 1:18-23
I have always considered the fact that I was ‘persuaded’ of the reality of God while in the fellowship of some of the brightest educators and students in America, while attending Drexel University in downtown Philadelphia, an institution known for its prowess in Engineering, to be one of God’s serendipities for me. Math and Science was a way of life for these folks. They lived and breathed it. And their prowess in Math and Science reinforced their faith in ways that provided me a foundation for faith that never has escaped me.   read more...
A Biblical Approach To New Year’s Eve
January 1, 2012 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
I think for many of us, it was the scene that ‘stole’ the dinner musical: The Neighborhood. A young mother (Natasha Allen) simply walks into theneighborhood, takes the plastic baby out of the manger, places in her own child(Connor), and sits on the stoop to dream of what her child could become. I suppose it is the dream of every parent. That bundle of innocent potential gives us such hope for their tomorrows. But then, life rolls in, and for far too many young people, that ‘bundle of potential turns to chaos, and we wait for ‘New Year’s Eve’, that glorious night that ushers in the ‘New Year’ with all of its potential for fresh beginnings.   read more...
Thinking About Our Gifts
December 25, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
I suspect that most of you are wearing, carrying or thinking about that brand new gift that showed up under the Christmas tree this morning. And why not? Gifts are so fun to receive because it means that somebody took the time to think about my favorite subject: ME! Come on, admit it, you love it when somebody really spends the energy and resources to find you that perfect gift. But what if our ‘gifts’, uniquely chosen just for us, were really meant to be ‘tools’ that would help us love those around us?

Seriously, We Missed It?
December 18, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
As we discussed last week, Matthew is intent on showing the historical factuality that surrounds the ‘Christ event’. And, as we discovered last week, we moderns have lost sight of most of that data. Many of you had no idea that ‘virginity‘ was such a big deal (people died when it was discovered missing), after all, in a modern church like ours, we don’t ‘stone‘ an unmarried pregnant woman, instead we throw her a baby shower and shower her with gifts. read more...
What About This Baby Bothers Me?
December 11, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
One of my favorite moments in this year’s dinner musical comes as the nosey binocular carrying neighbor (Bo) wraps up his argument with the resident grouchy Christian old woman, turning to the ‘baby Jesus’ in the nativity and asking, “What about this baby bothers me?” I’ve noticed that the baby Jesus bothers more than a few folks in the Christmas Narrative, not to mention modern folks, and for good reason I suspect. So I thought this morning we would focus in on Joseph and his irritation with the soon to be born ‘baby Jesus’.
Older Brothers
December 4, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
You would think after 30 plus years of pastoring, I would have a clue about the folks who hang around the church. Older Brothershave convinced me I am clueless. I asked them simply, Why did you stay and how do you feel about your church? Wow, did they have some things to share with their old pastor. And frankly, I wasn't expecting much of what they had to say. I suspect you will find it as unexpected as I did. Most surprising to me of all was the bad attitude, just like the older brother of Luke 15, that so many young people seem to have toward the church.
Prodigals

A Little Different Ending Than We Want To Hear... Luke 15:11-32
Our first two discussions (Exiles and Nomads), while alarming, simply addressed the modern concern of young people leaving the church in alarming numbers, not a leaving of their faith in totem. However, when turning our discussion toward ‘Prodigals’, the stakes rise considerably, as ‘faith’ itself is called into question. And sadly, unlike the Biblical tale found in Luke 15, Kinnaman reminds us that most ‘Prodigals’ never come home again.

Spiritual Wanderers Looking For A Place To Land - Acts 17:16-33
I have to confess, I had never heard of her, and the first web hit I clicked on, took me took her mega hit music video with one of my all time ‘you can’t be serious this guys is a star’ musicians ‘Snoop Dog’ (never have figured out what that means). She is laying on a cloud naked, singing her mega hit (after 20 seconds I clicked off thinking, “I’ve heard enough”) with Snoop Dog1. Rolling Stone (August 2010) produced a cover story on her life entitled: Sex, God and Katy, highlighting how the daughter of a Pentecostal Evangelical minister, who grew up singing in the choir and only eating ‘angeled eggs’ (never deviled, literally) came to be pop cultures brightest star: Katy Perry.

Exiled (like it or not) Daniel 1:1-21
Rarely do we encounter the ‘Judas Syndrome’ (handing Jesus back) as a sudden event. No, I would suggest most folks, those who exit the church, do so one step at a time, until that day arrives when ‘looking back’, they simply can’t see the church anymore. They have simply moved on. And let me suggest that the first stage of that process is what Kinnaman calls moving into the land of ‘Exiles’. It can be an extremely frustrating state of being, but for a good number of Mosaics/Milllenials (20-30 yrs of age) it is the condition of their existence.

Born, Raised and no longer in the Church
Matthew 9:35-38

If there is a more ripe for ‘harvest’ than our own children, born and raised in the church, I would really like to know where it is. Over the last few weeks I have labored over the words of Jesus in Matthew 9:37, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few...” and the thought provoking research provided by David Kinnaman, You Lost Me, a research summary of children raised within the Christian Church who by their the mid 20’s can no longer be found in the fellowship of a local church.
The Risk of Significance: Finishing Well...
October 30, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
How many stories could we tell of folks who at one point in their lives were sitting at the feet of Jesus, soaking in every word, yearning to be just like Him, only to ‘crash and burn’ further down the road. Sadly, it is a common tale, a tale that repeats itself over and over again. Our quest this morning is to ask “Why and how?” What happens to well intentioned folk who trek deep into the heart of Jesus, only to turn and walk away, sometimes so far away that they never make it back to the heart of Jesus. Perhaps Judas will give us a few clues to what happens to even the best intentioned folk who trek deep into the heart of Jesus...
Keeping The House Clean...
October 23, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Yep, you really need a professional! Luke 11:21-26
The journey into significance entails a tremendous amount of ‘house cleaning’ as God liberates us from those things that have so entangled our lives. But, as you may have experienced, just like the actual house you live in, keeping your ‘house’ clean, requires a great deal of effort. This morning we explore Jesus’ teaching on keeping the ‘house clean’. And, once again, these tales are just plain scary. Another haunted tale of Scripture that has much to teach us...

Touched by Satan and didn't even know it...
Luke 8:11 - 12/18
Of all the ‘haunted tales’ of Scripture, tales full of demonic possession and chaos, this is by far the scariest to me. Not because of the brutality and cruelty inflicted by the demonic, filled as Scripture is with those tales; but rather, because of the total lack of brutality, no bodies thrown into fire, no convulsions, no chaos of any kind. Instead, it is tale of stealth. And that my friends, is what makes the quiet assassin so terrifying. You never see him coming, or feel the pain, as he quietly and effortlessly kills you...

(Part 1) Let’s Do This Thing!
Luke 4:1-13
Yes, I am guilty as charged. I love Halloween and the opportunity it affords the Christian Community to steal what has become a secular cultural holiday, filling it with meaning that reflects the utter importance of getting our ‘collective head’ around how ‘evil’ operates in the modern setting. And let me suggest this morning that much of this message will be ‘moot’ for those who simply ‘muddle along’ in their relationship with God. Read More...

When Grasshoppers Rule the Day...
Numbers 14:1-44
Last week we began to examine the call of God to ‘explore the land’ and the famous tale of the ‘report of the spies’. This morning our attention turns from those who are in leadership toward those who are left to follow. Be warned it is a sad tale and reminds us of the the tremendous price that is paid by the people of God when we allow ‘fear’, even when it may be justified, to keep us from the appointed task that God has in mind for us.
Grasshopper Syndrome

Over coming self-doubt (ok, God doubt)...
Numbers 13:1-33
It is a terrible condition that has plagued followers of God for thousands of years. It feeds on self-doubt and more tragic, God-doubt. Today we follow the tale of its beginning: The Mission of the Spies. And as you will see it is extremely contagious and infects those who have been called to significance in the Kingdom of God. It reminds us that sometimes tackling ‘God’s next giant’ in your life is not any easier just because God has slain previous ‘giants’ in your path. Read More...
Lessons We Would Like To Forget
September 11, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
For my mother and father it was the day JFK was shot. It amazes me that I have any emotional memory of that event, young as I was (4), but I do (a story for another day). And somehow, my 4 year-old brain knew that the United States would never be the same. September 11th, 2001 I suspect is that same kind of marker for a majority of us sitting here this morning. As the video this morning told so graphically, it is a day that most of us remember with great detail. I was playing basketball with my buddies in Phoenix early in the AM when the first phone rang. Most of them, attorneys (ok, I used to hang out with a pretty tough crowd), were not Christians. Read More...
Why Work? Working to keep the ‘lights’ on...
September 4, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
I suspect that most folks have forgotten (if you ever knew) that Labor Day, one of the oldest American holidays, was established and celebrated as a festival highlighting the ‘privilege’ of working and the ‘right to fight’ for working conditions. And in an economy such as our current one, the privilege of ‘working’, is highly valued once again. But I wonder how many of you remember that the holiday was instituted by Congress in 1894 as a peace offering to heal the rift that had been created when the United States military killed several workers during the ‘Pullman Strike’.
Leadership - Thinking About Pastoral Review
August 28, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
I suppose most of us (pastors) dread the process. It is mandated by Nazarene polity, a polity that gives you, the members of each local church, a great deal of say about whether or not your 2-year journey with a new pastor should be extended to an additional 4-year term. Tuesday night, August 30th, your church board will engage in that process. So I thought it might be helpful to consider the process in light of biblical instructions. So here goes...
The Irresistible Church People! - Step 6
August 21, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Step Six: Everything Is About The Long Term...

M. Scott Peck, in his national best seller, The Road Less Travelled, suggested, “To live is to suffer...” He followed that with several hundred pages of how much happier we would be if we could just get our heads around that simple reality and stop working so hard to avoid the unavoidable: Life is difficult. Of course years later, after he became a Christian, he acknowledged how much easier the suffering is to deal with once you know there is purpose to ‘everything’ that flows your way, and even more importantly, that there is a huge payoff in the end...

Step Five: Love Is The Motivating Impulse...

Let me confess that I really love hanging with people who enjoy hanging out together. It’s contagious! Over the years I have discovered that ‘love for one another’ is an unmistakeable sign of an ‘Irresistible Church’. I have also discovered that it usually manifests itself in numerous small groups that operate continuously within the community of believers.

The Irresistible Church People! - Step 4

Step Four: Self-Feeding Is A Way Of Life...

Last week we explored the idea of hungering and thirsting after God, and doing so as a self starter who radically pursues God long before entering the doors of the church. Futurist Alvin Toffler wrote that “...the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn”. I would go so far as to suggest it, self-feeding and continual learning, may be the most critical aspect of an ‘irresistible church’.
The Irresistible Church People! - Step 3
July 24, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Step Three: Hunger For The Presence Of God

Its not the first time I have heard it, nor I suspect, will it be the last. And to be honest I didnʼt hear it exactly, instead I read it on FaceBook, on one of our NewportNaz pages, “No offense Don, but that was the best service I have ever been in”, as she described her recent visit to the deep south and a black southern Gospel experience. But I think I know what she meant: the presence of God was in the houseʼ. But it left me wondering, “Does this well seasoned follower of Christ, really think that I have anything to do with the presence of God ʻin the houseʼ, or lack there of?” See Sermon Notes for more...
The Irresistible Church People! - Step 2
July 17, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Step Two: Smell Nice!... 2 Corinthians 2:14-16

I confess, I really struggle with lots of perfumes, thanks to my genetic tie to momma and her allergic reactions to many perfumes; however, make no mistake, I still love the smell of just the right amount of my brideʼs perfume as that fragrant aroma fills my senses. Paul suggests that we, as the people of God, have a distinct aroma, an aroma that some find ever so pleasing, and others find ʻover the topʼ offensive.
The Irresistible Church People! - Step 1
July 10, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Step One: Its Never (ok, rarely) About The Building... Acts 14:21-28

The most misunderstood term, in all of the NT, and for good reason, may be the term ʻchurchʼ. It is misunderstood precisely because we have this very bad habit of calling ʻbuildingsʼ churches, which couldnʼt be further from the NT concept. Thus, over the next few weeks we are going to attempt to finally rid ourselves of that misconception at NewportNaz. After today, we are going to be very clear that when we say, “Irresistible Church” we emphatically mean “Irresistible People”. Off we go...

“...and the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians” is a pretty amazing description of how God works to care for Godʼs people even in the midst of the worst economic conditions. And it sets the stage for later developments in our lives when God approaches us about using our resources for purposes that God has in mind, purposes that may require us to let loose of some of the wealth we have acquired.

Exodus 6:6-9 / 11:1-9 / 12:1-51

Most of us, I think, never really experience (or at least donʼt realize we are in it) the ʻsovereign hand of Godʼ in a particular place and time, those conditions that God has set in place and intends to use for particular purposes. Our tale this morning describes the journey of the Egyptians and the Israelites as God decides to implement a ʻsovereign planʼ that is going to unfold regardless of what we do.

But Maybe Not Exactly What You Were Expecting...
Exodus 4:29-31 / 5:21 / 6:6-8 / 12:12-13

I think the thing I most looked forward to about becoming an ʻadultʼ was the mistaking notion that once I was an ʻadultʼ, I would be free to run my own life (and oh how I miss that fairy tale now that I am all grown up). But of course for most of us the needs of the family, far outweigh our own desires and wishes, more times than not. And yes, being part of the family of God likewise means, the needs of the family, often outweigh my personal wants and desires.

The challenge to be a part of something bigger than you are... Exodus 3:1-12

Ever notice that God has a way of expecting greatness out of plain old ordinary folk like us? But here is an important life lesson: The Presence Of God Turns Even The Most Mundane Life Into An Extraordinary Adventure!

May 1, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
We were on our way to Bend Easter afternoon when my bride said, “You didnʼt nail home why we should be willing to ʻinvestʼ so much in the Kingdom of God?” I responded, “I jammed more than I should have in an already 2 hour service.” But I knew she was right. We do need to nail down why we are to ʻinvestʼ so much in the Kingdom of God. And perhaps no better place to begin than by continuing our journey through 1 Corinthians 15. As you might guess, Paul has some pretty concise thoughts on the subject...
The Most Pitied Of All Men, Really?
April 24, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Easter, like most holidays, is always an awkward time for Church folk. On the one hand, it is thrilling to have so many family and friends drop in for a visit, creating the temptation to ʻwater downʼ the highpoint of the Christian Gospel, wanting to make sure we donʼt offend anyone. Yet, on the other hand, the brutality of the crucifixion reminds us of the reality that the Gospel of Grace was paid for at a serious cost to Jesus. This morning, our hope is that as you bring Holy Week Services to a close1, you will be touched by the grace of God, yet again, as the story of Resurrection rises up out of the ashes of crucifixion.
If The Church Were A Family? Part 3
April 17, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Sometimes it is difficult for we moderns to understand the concept of a ʻFamily Coat of Armsʼ, and little wonder, given the fragile nature of the family within the United States, and the loss of family identity tied to specific trades. Nonetheless, one of the primary roles of family life is to ʻimprintʼ and ʻimplantʼ value structures of the ʻfamilyʼ upon its members; so much so that non-family members find it easy to identify you as one of ʻthemʼ. In Antioch that reality began to take shape in those previously called ʻdisciplesʼ. This morning we want to explore the subtle changes that describe the process of moving from ʻdiscipleʻ to ʻChrist-ianʼ...
If The Church Were A Family? Part 2
April 10, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
If as we suggested last week, Jesus was indeed serious about applying ʻfamily modelsʼ to life in the Church, it doesʼt take long for us to see that application begin to take shape. Consider this mornings example of someone headed to church suddenly remembering his ʻbrotherʼ (non-paternal) has something against him. Will it surprise you that Jesus is quick to mandate an approach to a predicament such as that...?
If The Church Were A Family?

Forgetting much of what you know about the modern family... Modern Family is the new ABC hit TV series and it came highly recommended via my son, who warned me, knowing cultural TV is not high on my list of ways I want to spend my evenings, that indeed, the show is about a ʻmodern familyʼ. Yep, with its divorced and remarried anglo ʻheadʼ, who of course marries a much younger latino woman, likewise divorced with a little boy, followed by the gay son, who has ʻmarriedʼ his partner, who in turn adopt an asian infant, and the list goes on. And yes, it is funny.

March 20, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Several weeks ago we jumped into the inner workings of the female being, and boy was that a journey into the ʻFemale Twilight Zoneʼ for many of the men in our sanctuary. This morning we return to the ʻTwilight Zoneʼ, only this time we focus of the male version, an equally unnerving arena for many a well intentioned female. Be warned as we journey forward that much of what we will hear and ultimately discover will make both men and woman uncomfortable, simply because we know Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. Nonetheless, if the Martians are going to continue to exist with the Venetians, we better get handle on all this.

Itʼs ok to admit men, “We donʼt have a clue how those females we are committed to or dating are wired” and even when we do (following todayʼs message), we still donʼt have a clue how to interact with these ʻsuitable helpersʼ that God decided to put together for us (perhaps because no two females are wired the exact same way). Nonetheless, here we are, looking for clues that just might help us to ʻloveʼ these wonderfully mysterious and gentile spirits that God has paired us with. And you can bet if you donʼt understand her, you will fail miserably in your attempts to love her.
And they will become one flesh...
February 20, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
I think most of us tend to ask at one time or another, “Why did God make the guidelines for life that we are instructed to live by? Was it simply to give us a way to demonstrate that we love and are committed to God or are there ʻbenefitsʼ embedded in obedience to those guidelines that will actually make our lives more content and fulfilling?” Let me suggest this morning that the latter is certainly the case; especially when it pertains to marriage. Let me also suggest that this series of messages are not ʻpolitically correctʼ, nor will they fall into the parameters of socially-acceptable norms (if such a thing actually exists). Instead, the material presented will be rooted in a ʻbiblical worldviewʼ that at times, though not ʻevery timeʼ, conflicts with current popular norms....

Learning ʻGod-Speakʼ (Part 5)
February 6, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
If you have been traveling with us the last four weeks you have noticed a recurring theme amongst NT writers, specifically, Paul, and now James. Both are insistent that ʻhearing Godʼ is dependent upon a repetitive cycle of ʻhearing,/implementing, hearing/implementing, hearing/implementing... This morning, we examine that cycle yet again as James suggests a ʻrooting outʼ process that must occur as we enter deeper and deeper into the ʻhearing Godʼ process. Or more to the point, the rooting out that must occur if we are to arrive at the final stages of maturity.

Learning ʻGod-Speakʼ (Part 4)
January 23, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week we explored the critical step of ʻinputtingʼ the written Word of God as it has been passed on from ʻreliableʼ men, most notably, the Apostles. But I suspect that you have discovered that the ʻspecificsʼ of the Word simply do not cover every situation in your personal life. Hence, we develop the need for ʻwisdomʼ, knowledge enabling us to apply what we do know to the day-to-day scenarios we face. The ability to ʻimproviseʼ is critical to continuing to ʻhear Godʼ.
Learning ʻGod-Speakʼ (Part 3)
January 16, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week we began to explore the idea that ʻGod-Speakʼ, like any new language or value system, has to be incorporated into our lives in such a profound way that it actually renders the previous language as ʻdestroyedʼ or abandoned. The reality, however, as anyone who has tried to learn a new language will tell you, is that replacing a ʻmother tongueʼ is almost impossible. This morning we will explore Paulʼs analysis of why we continue to hear so little ʻGod-Speakʼ in our day-to-day living. Hang on to your hats, as you might expect, he is not very gentle with us...
Learning ʻGod-Speakʼ (Part 2)
January 9, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week we began our journey with a profound, yet simple, truth: ʻGod-Speakʼ is not our mother tongue; rather, it must be learned. With that understanding comes the need to step out and gain the tools that will enable us to hear and understand ʻGod-Speakʼ. First is the need to acquire the enabling presence of the Holy Spirit. Our focus this week centers on learning to be empowered by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit (next week we will focus on the basic elements of ʻGod-Speakʼ).
Learning ʻGod-Speakʼ (Part 1)
January 2, 2011 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
My interest in this series was sparked by the dialogue that quickly irrupted at my HeartWalk Cafe table. One the men put it as plainly as I have ever heard, “Pastor, you make it sound like you and God chat with each other on a frequent basis. I donʼt think I ever hear God like you and my wife seem to, but I really want to. How do I begin to hear Godʼs voice?” This series is dedicated to answering that simple and yet profound question. Let me know in 5 weeks whether or not I answered his heartfelt inquiry?
He will save them from their sin...
December 26, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
He is simply known as ʻOld Man Marleyʼ and its hard not to identify with this lonely father and grandfather who has forgotten the primary message of Christmas: Forgiveness. ʻOld Man Marleyʼ, like so many of us, attempts to sustain a relationship with God while estranged from the people he most needs to love and cherish, his family. And tragically, ʻOld Man Marleyʼ, is the metaphor for ʻmany of usʼ. Perhaps ʻOld Man Marleyʼ really does show us the way to receive the gift of Christmas intended by God.
Whatever It Takes To Get Back Home!
December 19, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Surely, you can relate to poor mom as she is willing to pay any price to get back home to Kevin, even if it means riding with John Candy and his band of polka buddies. Though rarely talked about, John the Baptist also paid a price for getting himself, and whole lot of others, home. Christmas, perhaps more than anything else, is Godʼs invitation to come back home. Perhaps, John the Baptist, wild locusts and all, can give us a ride back home...
Donʼt Forget the Child!
December 12, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
The idea of sleeping the night before we embark on a big trip is silliness in my
experience; instead, I wake up just about every 45 minutes to make sure that I
donʼt miss that proverbial wake-up call. So, I really canʼt relate to the folly of
waking up only when the limo driver arrives. Poor Joseph didnʼt need to wake
up early because he didnʼt know he was taking a trip until the moment it was

Be Careful What You Wish For...
December 5, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Hard not to grin when you hear Kevin wish for his family to disappear. But as Kevin quickly learns, we need to be very careful about what we ask for. That reality was never more true than for the Israelites who were praying hard for the Messiah to come. Of course, sometimes answered prayer can make us nervous, especially if we werenʼt as specific about our request as we should have been, as you will quickly discover...

Why Guard An Empty Vault?
November 14, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Guarding the heart is a 3-step process. First comes the realization that we need to be very careful what we allow in, as it can be quite complicated to get it out. Second is the call to download the appropriate data. Third, and finally, is the call to carefully guard a fully-loaded heart. And yes, God warns us that the ʻheartʼ is the control center for each of us, requiring the warning: Handle With Care.
Being Careful Not To Waste Time...
November 7, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Over the last month we have explored what 'love' is as described in the NT.
Our attention now turns to 1 Corinthians 13 and the'primacy of love', but not
just as an important element of 'life' in community; rather, the absolute
necessity of love as the foundation of meaningful community. The Apostle Paul
will go so far as to say, without it, community will not exist. Perhaps we better
explore this a little deeper than expected...
The Subtlety Of It All...
October 31, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Halloween is a tricky topic for the Christian community. Some of us, like myself, want to ʻstealʼ it, making it a Christian celebration, highlighting Christʼs victory over the demonic1 . Others, want to ignore it altogether, creating an alternative celebration (like a Harvest Festival or the like) or simply refuse to allow their children to do anything that smacks of a Halloween celebration, regardless of the label attached to it. I want to suggest this morning that Halloween is a great opportunity for us to teach our children about the reality of ʻevilʼ and the ʻdemonicʼ and the victory that is ours in Christ.

Learning To ʻLoveʼ The People of God - Part 2
October 17, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week we began to explore what it means to ʻloveʼ within the body of Christ. We began with a rather startling realization that Jesus radically re-describes the parameters for ʻloveʼ toward those who are ʻHisʼ sheep. And with that demarcation point comes a rather startling presentation of responsibility toward those ʻsheepʼ: feed them. ʻPhileo', the term Peter uses in spite of Jesusʼ attempt to install ʻagapeʼ carries a subtle but important distinction that we began to discuss last week. ʻPhileo' suggests... ...acting intentionally, in sympathetic response to others (including God), to promote overall well-being, when working to establish deeper levels of mutuality, reciprocity, or cooperation, in community.
Learning To ʻLoveʼ The People of God - Part 1
October 10, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
As we transition to another biblical concept in relationship to ʻloveʼ, it is important to emphasize that the distinctions between these terms are important but much more fluid than we might recognize at first. Hence, translators continue to use the English word ʻloveʼ even though the term is distinctly different in the koine Greek. So we will do well to think in terms of subtle distinctions rather than wholesale differences. With that in mind, we begin our exploration of the concept of ʻphileo' with a basic guiding definition that flows within the basic concept of love we began with several weeks ago:
Love: Sounds Simple Enough - Part 2
October 3, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week, we began our exploration of precisely what ʻagapeʼ looks like in relationship to Godʼs movement toward us, followed by the challenging call to begin to ʻloveʼ (agape) as God loves. Thus, we are called to move toward God and others with the same kind of love that God initiates toward us. But, as you might guess, there are significant limitations that hamper our ability to do the following: ʻAgapeʼ is intentional, sympathetic response to promote overall wellbeing when confronted by that which generates ill-being.
Love: Sounds Simple Enough - Part 1
September 26, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week, we arrived at a general definition for ʻloveʼ within the NT, but as many of you know, the NT uses a variety of terms for love, each providing a different perspective on how the general concept of love plays out in the many scenarios of our lives. This morning we want to begin to explore the 3 primary terms employed by the NT (agape, storge and phileo1), seeking to discover how we might best ʻloveʼ in the unique and yet similar conditions of our lives. Thus, we will first explore the dominant NT term: agape/αγαπε...

Eat... Pray... Love...
September 12, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
If you havenʼt seen the movie yet, or read the book (I plan to do both and we plan to discuss the book later this winter), donʼt worry, this series has nothing to do with either. Instead, we are going to explore why the movie and book touch something deep within each of us, the need to be part of a rich and rewarding love affair with God, others and life. Dr. Thomas Oord calls it ʻfull-orbedʼ love.1 Our goal over the next 4 weeks is to explore what ʻfull orbedʼ love would look like in the lives of those seeking to imitate God, who as John tells us, is love. I suspect our journey over the next 4 weeks will help you to Eat, Pray and Love with gusto...
Labor Day Without The Labor
September 5, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Mikey tells me often, “I donʼt like work, just playing, and I really donʼt like
cleaning up after I play!” In fact, it is almost a daily conversation us. Truth be
told, he is already learning to pretend like he doesnʼt hear me when I call his
name. Our look back to Deuteronomy this morning reminds us that too often
we want the privileges but not the responsibilities of being a child of God. You
may notice some similarities between the Israelites and yourself as you visit
this moment of recollection...
Talk About An Expensive Dinner
August 29, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week we explored the startling reality of ʻdisciplineʼ in the life of Godʼs children, even those who have been faithful. The story continues as we begin to understand that there is much at stake here, not just for today, but for tomorrow as well. No surprise here, decisions we make today will have lasting affects, and many of those decisions are not available for do-overs. So consider the importance of living well in the moment...
Not Punishment ... Rather Discipline
August 22, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
From my perspective, on the receiving end of the belt, ʻpunishmentʼ and ʻdisciplineʼ looked pretty much the same. Nonetheless, my dad would tell me before and after each one of those little sessions, and yes, there were quite a few, that he was ʻspankingʼ me because he loved me. Donʼt know that I believed him then, but I certainly do now. This morning we want to make sure we understand the difference, and believe me when I tell you, there is a huge difference in the two. And yes, they both ʻsmartedʼ...
ARE YOU BEATITUDEFUL?
August 15, 2010 - Pastor Jeff Branaman
Today we will be studying the Beatitudes in Matthew chapter 5. There are so many ways to preach on the Beatitudes and so many lessons for us to learn from them. My approach today was really started because of something my wife Deanna mentioned a few years ago when she was studying Matthew five. She shared with me that she saw the Beatitudes as a process God takes a Christian life through. I began to keep my eye on my life and others with that in mind and started to buy into her theory.
Delayed Gratification
August 8, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week we explored the dramatic realization that this ʻraceʼ (gauntlet) we are on is no easy course. To the contrary, it will often ʻdraw bloodʼ and cause us to pause in our trek after Jesus. Thus, God reminds us to stay focused on the end goal, a prize worthy of whatever circumstances we may encounter as we run the gauntlet.
Let The Weeding Begin (Pt 2)
August 1, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last Sunday we began or journey into the concept of running the ‘race’ (gauntlet) as we follow Christ. We discussed in detail the preparation necessary to think about ‘racing’, laying aside those things which hinder us. This morning we want to dig a little deeper, to consider the possibility of ‘throwing off’ sin as we prepare to ‘race’ , no ‘run’ the race.
Let The Weeding Begin (Pt 1)
July 25, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
I wish I could tell you that your ‘history’, your pre-Jesus days, your yesterday, has no impact on your ability to run the race that God has in mind for you today, but that would be like telling you, you can take on the challenge of the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim without any training or weight loss, but alas, you know better. As our attention turns to the book of Hebrews we are reminded of God’s call to run the ‘good race’, but only after we have ‘cut loose’ those things from our past that keep us from ‘being’ what God has called us to be. Over the next 6 weeks we hope to uncover God’s simple methodology for running the ‘good race’. But clearly it begins with a good start, free from the hindrances and sin that have plagued us for years…
The Decision to Buy the Field
July 18, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
One of the key dimensions to our study of the Kingdom of Heaven and its principles has been the recognition that “...My (God) thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways” (Isaiah 55:8). That of course has triggered our dialogues concerning the acquisition of the ‘Wisdom of God’ and it’s application into our everyday lives. Our parable this morning pushes the discussion even further and begins to ask the question, “Do you see and understand the ‘value’ of the seeds that God is making available in your life?” Do you see God’s principles as treasure?
Not Happy With Your Crop?
July 11, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Life is short, making the principles of crop multiplication ever more important. And as you certainly understand, every year wasted is a year that you cannot get back. Every harvest, by necessity, has a huge impact on the following harvest. More to the point this morning, once a crop is infected, it takes years to ‘restore it’ to ‘good’ status. Give this some serious thought this morning...
Seed, Fruit, Harvest and other Loose Ends
July 4, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
4th of July serves as a powerful reminder of our topic this morning: Rome wasn’t built in a day (nor the United States). Further, its future is always in the hand of the next generation. What we celebrate today is the result of 6-8 generations of Americans who have in turn re-planted the harvest that has been handed to them. This morning we explore the cycle of plant and harvest1 that has to be repeated over and over again in the life of every great nation, and Christ Follower.
Everything but the Tulips!
June 27, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
My home in Arizona has hundreds of Tulips. But there is a problem. Year after year I watch the beautiful stalks rise up in the air, thinking, this is the year when they will finally produce, when they will finally make Tulips! And to date, in spite of all my efforts, fertilizer, bulb separation, re-planting, watering, etc…, I still have yet to see an actual Tulip. Now here is the funny part. People ask me all the time, “Why do you keep the tulips?” Simple really, I keep hoping for a Tulip. But I confess, I am just about at my limit of tolerance for Tulips that produce no Tulips. Makes one wonder how God feels about us when we fail to produce fruit year-after-year…
It Looked Fun At First
June 20, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
For those who have been with us over the past few weeks you may have begun to ‘understand’ that these parables build upon each other in a sequential manner, both within the elements of the individual parable and complete sequential parables as they are layered upon each other. Hence, this morning we begin our journey standing upon the principles we have already discussed. Case in point, ‘understanding’ as skillful application, not simply mental comprehension. The consequences we will discuss this morning occur not because you understand (mental comprehension); rather because you ‘understand’, suggesting skillful application. You will see why shortly…
Ripped From the Heart...?
June 13, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Once the calluses have been removed releasing the ears to hear again (last week), the simplicity of the parable quickly penetrates the mind and heart, providing insight for immediate application into our lives. However, as we shall see this morning, for those who do not follow through via application of ‘revelation’ (reception of seed) the consequences are more severe than we might expect.
Who Knew Attending Church Was Dangerous?
June 6, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Last week we really began to focus in on the reality that ‘God’s ways are not our ways’ (Isaiah 55:8-9) and I wish I could tell you that learning ‘God’s ways’ was a quick and simple process, but you know better. This morning we want to explore the ‘how and why’ of learning ‘God’s ways’, affirming that when we do, the anointing and blessing of God becomes accessible for those who actualize ‘God’s way’ into their day-to-day living. Jesus reminds us that the process really is simple for those who choose to engage, and life threatening for those who don’t…
God’s Ways Are Not Our Ways
May 30, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Is it ok to confess that sometimes the ‘ways of God’ get me a little crazy at times? That sometimes I just can’t seem to get my ‘head around’ how God goes about working things out in the Kingdom of God? At 50 I have finally figured out “God’s ways are not our ways”, but I confess, understanding often does not soothe me in the realities of the moment. The parable of the Vineyard Workers stands as case in point. Frankly, I find myself ‘grumbling’ with the first workers almost every time I read the parable. This could get a bit uncomfortable this morning, so hang on…
Journeys Into the Tale of The Prodigal-The Brother
May 16, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Our passage this morning begins with, “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field…” code for, “While the older son was working…” And that will do little to quell the ‘righteous indignation’ that soon consumes the older brother, a reaction that is nothing new to Scripture. David expressed a similar frustration many times in the Psalms as he saw the successes of those who were not serving God. And if you have ‘behaved’ yourself (at least in your own mind), then you may have felt that burning fire a time or two in your own journey. Follow along this morning as we allow ourselves to explore the causes, and cure, for our own indignation concerning what we perceive to be unmerited and undeserved grace1…
Journeys Into the Tale of The Prodigal-The Father
May 9, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
This morning we want to explore the father’s response to the foolishness of his youngest son. In particular, we want to better understand what we can reasonably expect, attitudinally and materially, from a gracious father whose every desire is to see us experience abundant life to the fullest, in spite of our squandering previous resources. Yet, most importantly, we may discover how to respond to those ‘prodigals’ in our lives who have cost us dearly.
Journeys Into the Tale of The Prodigal-The Son
May 2, 2010 - Dr. Rev. Donald Minter
Like it or not, life offers plenty of opportunity for bad decision making, decisions that may unexpectedly impact every relationship connected to us. This morning, we begin a 3 week journey into the tale of the ‘prodigal son’ and its implications for those of us who have either been the prodigal at one time or another, or are simply dealing with the consequences created by a ‘prodigal’. As we explore these 3 key characters over the next 3 weeks, you will probably discover that at one time or another, we have played all 3 roles. There is much here for us to discover as we journey together…
